Within BASF Seed and Traits R&D, the Trait Testing group is responsible for producing high-quality plants, seeds and data to allow selection of the best performing events in controlled environment. Our team grows and evaluates plants for various field crops such as wheat, soybean, oilseed rape and cotton, and produces and ships seeds for further evaluation in the field. Trait Testing is embedded in the Trait Research department that focuses on design, creation and testing of genetic engineering, genome editing and mutagenesis-based traits.

We are seeking a pragmatic, enthusiastic and hands-on Technician to join the Trait Testing group at our R&D Innovation Center in Ghent, Belgium.

Responsibilities

In this role you will be part of our Trait Testing group and support delivering on R&D projects at a competitive cost, speed, and quality.

  • You will be hands-on involved in the execution and organization of research experiments in controlled environments (greenhouse and growth chambers).
  • You will record, compile and summarize experimental data, reporting findings to your supervisor and entering them into relevant databases (Ceres and eLN).
  • You will independently evaluate the technical quality of data generated in experiments and troubleshoot when needed.
  • You will contribute to workflow improvements.
  • You will develop and broaden technical skills and strengthen innovative thinking.
  • You will show self-leadership: increase the ability to plan tasks efficiently and autonomously.
  • You will ensure compliance with all existing company standards (Quality, Health, Safety, Environment, Biosafety & Stewardship) in your area of responsibility.
  • You will comply to the BASF CORE values (Creative – Open – Responsible – Entrepreneurial) and culture.

Qualifications

  • You have a Bachelor’s degree in Life Sciences (or equivalent through experience) with at least 3 years of relevant and successful experience.
  • You demonstrate accuracy and can work independently on technical tasks.
  • You possess a strong knowledge, understanding, and hands-on experience with technical protocols, preferable in the area of plant cultivation and evaluation. Experience in the cultivation of field crops in a controlled environment is a plus, but not a requirement.
  • You are capable of planning and organizing your work on a weekly basis.
  • You have relevant computer skills (Microsoft Office) and a strong digital mindset, with an affinity for relevant software and databases. Additionally, you are confident in integrating new digital tools into your daily workflow.
  • You can communicate effectively, both orally and writing, in Dutch and English.
  • You are a team player who is eager to learn.
  • You exhibit a positive, enthusiastic, and pragmatic attitude, with a strong “getting-things-done” mentality.

Benefits

  • A permanent contract within an attractive working environment in a professional and motivated team.
  • A role with challenging assignments and responsibilities.
  • An attractive base salary in relation to your diploma and competencies, an annual bonus and extra-legal benefits.
