The BASF team is seeking a motivated Junior Scientific Programmer to join us. The team focuses on statistical genetics, experimental design, and data analysis in molecular breeding processes, in close collaboration with breeders, geneticists, and software developers.

The Junior Scientific Programmer will develop and participate in projects that support efficient data and analytics workflows, computational tools/platforms, and reporting software. The selected candidate will also contribute to the implementation of state-of-the-art algorithms to improve genetic gain in breeding programs and be expected to identify and maintain an evolving analytics toolbox.

Responsibilities

  • You create innovative, scalable, fault-tolerant software solutions for our customers with clear technical specifications and documentation, striving to create interconnectivity of solutions.
  • You automate frequently used scientific workflows, and implement new methods developed in-house or through collaboration.
  • You act as a translator for our customer’s digital needs, and hereby interact with project managers, designers, other developers, systems analysts, and R&D specialists to support the design and implementation of the most adequate technological solutions.
  • With your analytical mindset, you support R&D specialists.
  • You ensure a robust and performant analytics platform for our team.
  • You work closely together with the head of Biometrics and the Biometrics Technology lead. You are a reliable technical support during critical periods in the year to ensure delivery of time-sensitive results.
  • You interact with R&D teams in a collaborative effort to develop and deliver a high quality product to farmers.

Qualifications

  • You hold a MSc in Computer Science, Statistics, Bioinformatics or related scientific field with a strong affinity for applied statistics.
  • You have strong scripting skills in R and have basics of Python.
  • You are experienced in working in a collaborative IT environment which includes  knowledge of a version controlling system like git.
  • You are an expert in connecting data and analytics (especially REST, GraphQl APIs) in the context of prototyping, established graphical interfaces, and towards expert users.
  • Knowledge of Cloud-based analytics is not a prerequisite but would be of value.
  • You have a creative and innovative mindset and act proactively.
  • You have excellent communication and analytical skills.
  • You work autonomously with limited supervision from senior team members. You have interest in supporting and working with cross-functional teams in a dynamic environment.
