In this key role, reporting to the European Breeding Manager for Oilseed Rape (OSR), you will support the strategy, development, and execution of our European OSR breeding program objectives. You will focus on hybrid development aligned with our portfolio needs, ultimately delivering enhanced products that will feed into the InVigor OSR pipeline for the region.

Responsibilities

  • You will engage in short-term planning for hybrid development, which includes developing and managing breeding project plans and selecting parent lines and hybrids for advancement.
  • You will provide key support to the Regional Breeder in all collaborations with external partners.
  • You will produce and evaluate joint hybrids while preparing comprehensive reports for both breeders and external partners.
  • You will lead maintenance breeding, overseeing experimental parent increases and managing the production of hybrids in Southern Europe for variety registration trials across EMEA.
  • You will collaborate closely with other breeders, including Molecular/Discovery breeders, Disease Resistant Breeders, and Biometrics teams, to implement advanced breeding technologies and develop predictive breeding methods.
  • You will analyze data, create reports, and present advancements internally within the breeding team and to other parts of the business as required.
  • You will collect in-season evaluations and work with teams to ensure high-quality data is gathered for selection.
  • You will participate in day-to-day planning and execution, which will include resource planning and staffing with Senior Breeder and Agronomist teams.

Qualifications

  • You hold a Ph.D. degree in Plant Breeding or another relevant agricultural science, or you have a Master’s Degree with 3 years of experience in breeding programs or related fields.
  • You have experience working in a plant breeding program and managing breeding projects effectively.
  • You are familiar with experimental design, data collection, and statistical analysis.
  • You have experience with coding in R or similar software programs for analyzing data in statistics, genetic mapping, diversity analysis, quantitative genetics, genome-wide selection, and visualizing outputs.
  • You possess a strong understanding of genomics tools and approaches, such as genome sequencing, QTL mapping, and genome association studies.
  • Experience in OSR breeding or other Brassica crops would be an asset for you.
  • You have expertise in modern plant breeding tools and familiarity with traditional plant breeding methods and crop production.
  • You have a mindset that challenges the status quo to improve strategies, methods, and procedures in a fast-paced environment.
  • You demonstrate excellent organizational and record-keeping skills.
  • You adopt a collaborative approach, with strong communication skills and the ability to influence cross-functional teams while being open to giving and receiving ideas, perspectives, and feedback.
